Glaucoma is a degenerative disease of the eye, if not treated, it may gradually cause permanent vision loss. Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is the way to send images from the eye to the brain.
Glaucoma causes the transfer these images to the brain difficult.
Glaucoma can steal sight without warning, because there may be no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. There is no cure for glaucoma, however, medications, laser treatments and / or surgery can slow or prevent vision loss. Early detection is essential to slow or stop disease progression.
It is the most common type of glaucoma. This type of glaucoma occurs when the clear fluid in the eye (aqueous humor) that circulates and delivers food to the optic nerve, increases, causing an increase in pressure (intraocular pressue IOP) in the eye. The pressure increase may be the overproduction of fluid or to reduce drainage from the eye. Open Angle Glaucoma happens when the eye drainage canals become clogged over time. This type of glaucoma develops slowly and can cause a gradual loss of vision, and sometimes without noticeable sight loss for many years. This type of glaucoma responds well to medications, especially if caught and treated in the early stages of the disease.
Sometimes referred to as acute glaucoma or narrow, this type of disease is less common and is very different from the open glaucoma. The pressure in the eye usually rises rapidly, causing symptoms such as headaches, eye pain, nausea, rainbows around lights at night and very blurred vision. The pressure increases due to the blocking of drainage channels of the eye, similar to the sink with something covering the drain. This type of glaucoma develops when the iris is not as wide and open as it should be. The outer edge of the iris, when extended, bunches up in drainage channels, causing a blockage.
Treatment usually consists of a simple laser procedure to remove a small part of the outer edge of the iris. This allows the iris to cover the drainage channels. This procedure is usually effective and long lasting. Regular eye exams are necessary to verify proper drainage. In some cases, medications are needed to treat this disease.
This type of glaucoma is also known as glaucoma, low tension or normal tension glaucoma. Normal tension glaucoma is diagnosed, the ophthalmologist examines your eyes and found damage to the optic nerve. Normal tension glaucoma is an accurate description of the disease because it occurs even in patients intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) is normal. It is not known why some people suffer optic nerves with normal intraocular pressure. Most doctors treat this type of glaucoma medications to maintain low pressure, as well as the procedures and laser surgery.
